WATER AND SANITATION MINISTER VISITS BWB, TOURS MZEDI DUMPSITE
Today, October 29 2024, the Minister of Water and Sanitation, Hon. Abida Sidik Mia, MP, visited the Blantyre Water Board (BWB) and conducted a site tour of ongoing construction works for the access road to the Mzedi dumpsite under the Malawi Water and Sanitation Project-1 (MWSP-1).
During her visit, the Minister met with officials from BWB and Blantyre City Council (BCC) to receive an update on the project. Expressing her enthusiasm, the Hon. Minister commended the progress, noting that the project is advancing as planned and highlighting the significant impact it will have on the lives of the community.
"I'm very satisfied with the pace, by next year Blantyre will literally become a construction site which is good for the residents since it will create employment whilst creating better water supply and sanitation services", said Mia.
Agreeing with the Minister, the Board Chairperson for Blantyre Water Board Mr. Joe Ching'ani pointed out that the first year has been for planning, assessment, and advisory services which are currently on track and expected to be completed early next year.
" We are on track in as far as the milestones are concerned. It's a 5-year project and the first year up to now has been about designs, baseline studies and consultancies which will be completed by January next year, after which the real works of construction will commence", said Ching'ani.
Through the MWSP-1, about 1.4 million residents of Blantyre city and surrounding areas are expected to benefit from improved water and sanitation services.
