Minister calls for vigilance in addressing water losses

Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development, Honourable Roza Fatch Mbilizi MP, has called for heightened vigilance in addressing non-revenue water, which includes losses arising from leakages, burst pipes, illegal connections and unpaid bills, among other factors.

Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development, Honourable Roza Fatch Mbilizi MP, has called for heightened vigilance in addressing non-revenue water, which includes losses arising from leakages, burst pipes, illegal connections and unpaid bills, among other factors. She made the remarks today, 2nd February 2026, during a visit to Blantyre Water Board (BWB) head offices, where she was familiarising herself with the Board’s operations, challenges and ongoing developments. Speaking in an interview, the Minister observed that non-revenue water levels at Blantyre Water Board remain very high and require serious intervention. She advised BWB management to place greater emphasis on reducing non-revenue water in order to improve service delivery. “My impression is that the Board is doing its best to ensure that people in Blantyre have access to reliable potable water. However, there are efficiency issues that need to be addressed. One of the most critical areas is the reduction of non-revenue water and the improvement of revenue collection from those accessing the service,” she said. Concurring with the Minister, Board Member George Eneya, speaking on behalf of the Board Chairperson, assured that the current Board of Directors will ensure that these challenges are effectively addressed. The Minister concluded her visit with a tour to the site where the Board intends to build new offices under the Malawi Water and Sanitation Project-1.
